An HDS Librarian/Media Specialist will be responsible for all aspects of leading and
managing the schoolโs library, including but not limited to planning and
presenting lessons to students in grades PreK-5 and managing the book
collection. With a strong knowledge of instructional technology, the
Librarian/Media Specialist will also support students and teachers with the
day-to-day use of computers and individual devices. As an effective member of
the HDS faculty, the teacher is flexible and can work independently and
collaboratively with colleagues. The successful teacher is a lifelong learner who
welcomes opportunities for professional development and collegial conversation,
leading to the development of effective, differentiated, and developmentally
appropriate education for students in grades PreK - 8.
Qualifications & Skills:
โ A Bachelorโs Degree in Library Sciences, Information Sciences or Education,
Masterโs Degree preferred
โ Relevant teaching experience with an aptitude for using educational
technology
โ Expertise in Google, Mac iOS, and Windows
โ Patience, creativity, optimism, and adaptability
โ Knowledge of twenty-first-century learning principles and techniques
โ Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
โ A solution-oriented and growth mindset
โ Ability and interest in working with students in grades PK - 8.
Essential Functions:
โ Develop and implement activities that motivate students to read, write, view,
speak and listen for intrinsic satisfaction in learning, enrichment and personal
pleasure.
โ Implement policies and procedures for the Library/Media program. Ongoing
evaluation of these policies is necessary.
โ Guide students to become critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful
researchers and ethical users of information.
โ Select, evaluate, order and organize books and materials for the library,
information resources and relevant technologies in all formats.
โ Develop library collection to reflect cultural diversity.
โ Maintains data for media center operation, such as circulation and utilization.
โ Provides direct instruction to PK-5 students, including but not limited to
encouraging the love of reading, digital citizenship, and research methods.
โ Arrange for flexible scheduling of the school library to allow for students and
teachers to access books and other resources.
โ Collaborate with classroom teachers to plan correlating lessons and provide
materials to support classroom instruction.
โ Provide an inviting, organized, and aesthetically pleasing atmosphere
conducive to individual and group inquiry, research, and studying.
โ Supervise parent volunteers.
โ Plan and facilitate author visits and school-wide book fairs.
โ Incorporate Digital Citizenship lessons and educate students and parents on the
ethical uses of technology.
โ Provide support to teachers and students in the use of instructional technology.
โ Follow procedures related to high-risk situations.
โ Adhere to other duties assigned by the Head of School.
Preferred Skills:
โ Experience with use of educational technology to provide technical support to
staff and students to troubleshoot computer problems and to work with
classroom teachers supporting students' use of educational technology as
needed.
โ Interest in an After School Club offering Robotics and/or Coding.
โ Knowledge of and experience with STEM/STEAM programming.
